I have a very lovable, funny, personable cocker.Sandy is 8 months old. He talks to us when he is wanting something . He was easy to train . Loves my family but if a stranger including young children come in our yard or home he starts to bark and he will get agressive. Maybe we haven’t socialized him enough. He loves the dog park and gets along well with other dogs. But if we have him out and a child or adult comes near us the agression starts.

Does Sandy bark, or does he actually bite? Cockers are extremely protective, and they look as though they will bite. However, if the stranger holds out an open hand to let him smell the hand, the dog will usually calm down. If he still lunges, then Sandy may be aggressive. Cockers are “barkers” but generally won’t bite.

I totally understand what you are going through. My cocker, Maggie, had (and sometimes still does) that problem. I found it helps for the “stranger” to either offer a small treat or take one of Maggie’s toys and try to play with her. This will gain the dogs trust in the stranger and eventually the dog will just want to play with strangers, however, after we began trying this trick Maggie began to wonder out of the yard more!

The Cocker is known to be a sensitive dog, mentally and physically. He has a “soft” personality and does not respond well to harsh treatment, sometimes turning to growling or snapping when he’s in pain or afraid. Early socialization and training is essential to teach the Cocker appropriate canine manners. He needs to be handled carefully and kindly to bring out the best in his personality. Check this link for more information about your dog.

When the baby gate isnt up or when the door is open my puppy runs under my bed and will stay there for a bit. I am pretty sure she feels that this is a “safe” place to be. When I go to get her she kind of gets aggressive, nothing too serious yet but I dont want her being aggressive towards me for any reason. Any suggestions? I dont know much about this breed other than the fact that this puppy is very smart and very loving. When she does this I just ignore her and she comes out in a few minutes and looks for attention. I figure making her come out and encouraging the behavior is probably not a good thing but I am not sure how to manage this problem.

Thanks for any opinions!!
