I have a 5 month old pit bull terrier diablo, and he hates vacumes. Anyone have any idea why? he’ll start barking and running around and crying.

Hi Laura,

Are you able to answer the following, just so we can get more of an idea about Diablo’s behaviour?

In regards to the Vacuum Cleaner, how is he towards it? Does he try to run from it? Bite it?

Does he express a desire to basically flee from the Vacuum or confront it?

How long has he displayed this behaviour towards the Vacuum?

How do you, or anyone else, react to him when he displays this behaviour, do you for example, turn the Vacuum off and reassure him with a pat on the head?

Hopefully with the answers of those questions we may be able to diagnose the problem more clearly.

Many thanks.

Good questions from Steve Wishart. My bull terrier of years gone by used to attack the vacuum cleaner…attacking full force…many a vacuum bag suffered a horrible death. My current border colllie is cool with vacuums but detests the weed whacker, although she is terrified rather than aggressive. Solution to both situations? Put the dog somewhere else when you’re using the “offending” item…another room or outdoors/indoors depending on the situation. Bottom line is that no matter why the dog is upset or how the dog reacts, they’ll feel a lot more comfortable if they can get away from the “monster.”

We have three 3 month old pitts and while two of them insist on attacking the vacum, Nanu (which is mine and the only female), runs
from it,which leads me to believe it’s the noise the vacum makes.
