I TOLD MY VET ABOUT THIS AND SHE DID NOT ADMONISH ME, IN FACT SHE TOLD ME SHE MIGHT TRY IT ON ONE OF HER DOGS. I HAD A SHELTIE WHO NEEDED MEDS OFTEN. SHE WASN’T THE BEST PATIENT. I FOUND IF I BURIED HER PILL IN A MARSHMELLOWSHE TOOK IT AND LOVED IT. CHEESE AND MEAT THE PILL WOULD SOMETIMES DROP OUT. THE MARSHMELLOW WORKED WONDERS. I THINK I WILL TRY IT WITH THE HEARTWORM MEDS. I HAVE TWO OF THE THREE DACHSUNDS WON’T TAKE THE MED WITH OUT EXTREEM PRODING. I AM NOW GOING TO BREAK IT IN HALF AND PUT IN THE MARSHMELLOW.

Marshmallow consists mainly of sugar or corn syrup – and both are VERY UNHEALTHY for dogs… Tiny little piece once in a while is perhaps not a big deal, but I would certainly not recommend this as a daily approach…

I usually give my dog pills and vitamins with a little organic unsweetened peanut butter or chicken liver pate (some canned dog food – such as EVO 95 Beef, Wellness 95 Beef or Chicken, PetKind Venison/Duck/Salmon, etc. – have the same consistency as pate and work just as well) that I roll into a tight little ball with the pill in the middle. Works like a charm every time!

Our vet started us on Greenies “Pill Pockets” when our dog needed some antibioctics. Because she is a small dog we got the cat sized ones which are the same as the dog ones only smaller. She loved them and we’re not fighting over getting her to take the pills.

We used the gentle push to the back of the throat for our previous dog who was bigger, but our current dog has such a little mouth and she is such a wiggle worm the pill pockets work great. You can get them at the vets or both our Super Pets and PetCo have them.

Greenies Pill Pockets sound like a good idea in theory, and I considered them for my dog for a moment. However, Greenies are made by NUTRO…. FDA is currently investigating NUTRO and there have been on-going recalls of their products, so I would rather err on the safe side… I care too much about my dog to risk her health or possibly life with products by unsafe companies.

Besides the FDA investigation, I also don’t feel comfortable with the ingredients of the Greenies Pill Pockets (nor the original Greenies): many dogs are gluten intolerant – and wheat flour is the 3rd ingredient, followed soon by wheat gluten. I also don’t like the inclusion of corn syrup and corn flour… http://www.greenies.com/en_US/Products/DogPillP…

Too bad! I hope someone will take the idea of pill pockets and make something similar with truly healthy ingrediants.
