Do you think today’s dogs are more anxious than our parent’s pooches? If so, why? And if your dog’s suffering from anxiety, have you found any treatments that work? Share your thoughts and insights here.

I do think our dogs are more anxious now and my unprofessional opinion is that it’s because we are more anxious as well. Dogs always know how we feel and have a tendency to mimic us (hyper people raise hyper dogs, nervous people raise nervous dogs, etc.). There are of course exceptions to this, considering breed and temperment, but as a rule I think it holds true. I think as a society we are more anxious and therefore so are our dogs.

Fortunately, my dog doesn’t have anxiety – ironnically, neither do I.

I think it is a combination of things. Yes we are more stressed, leisure time is less and the world goes at a much faster pace than it did in our parent’s times.
We also are living more and more in large urban environments where noise pollution etc is a constant stimulation to dogs.
There is also the fact that dogs in the past were often bottom of the totem pole in the household as opposed to now when so many people have dogs instead of children and lavish so much attention on their “furkids” that any time spent away from them is incredibly stressful to both parties.
None of these things are bad, and dogs do adapt well to environmental streses but they are still stresses!
Cracker is a “velcro” dog and I find the more attention I give her the more separation anxiety she experiences. So I have to balance my life to ensure she gets some time and she gets some time alone. We create most of our own issues, and we create most of our dog’s issues.
Balance is key.
