I would like a pet suited to my lifestyle. I am middle aged single woman. I own my own home it has a very large yard I also work. I would like a pet suited to my life style. I am sort of a home body taking care of my home keeps me pretty busy with chores on the outside in the summer and indoor chores during the winter. What sort of dog would be a good match for me?

My favorite reference for this sort of thing is “The Right Dog for You” by Daniel Tatora. You are really smart (at least in my mind) for looking at older dogs. I adopted mine when he was 5 – he loves his long walks and playtime but also loves to sleep. Shelters are full of older dogs – check out the book and then look for a dog with a mix of the breeds most suited to you. Its how I find my perfect match!

Do try out our “Meet your match!” feature here on DogTime too. It asks questions that get at what kind of person you are, rather than what kind of dog you think you want, and then gives recommendations of breeds that have behaviors and needs compatible with you. Click on “meet your match!” in the far left.

I have a golden retriever at home and recomed this breed to anybody they are great dogs and love their families. And as for puppy vs. older I would go with a puppy then you can teach it what you want

I AGREE ON THE OLDER DOG. I GOT MY ROTTIE A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO, SHE WAS 2. NO TRAINING NECESSARY. I AM ALSO A HOME BODY AND IT IS GREAT HAVING HER THERE WITH ME FOR MANY REASONS. SHE GOES EVERY WHERE INSIDE AND OUT THAT I GO AND EVEN SEEMS TO WANT TO HELP ME WITH MY CHORES. LARGER, OLDER DOGS SEEM TO NOT TAKE UP TO MUCH TIME WANTING ATTENTION THEY WOULD RATHER GIVE IT.

I would personally recommend Cesar Millan’s dvd Your New Dog:First Day And Beyond as an excellent reference in finding the right dog to suit your family / lifestyle. If you are not familiar with his show The Dog Whisperer I recommend anyone out there to watch it ,he is awesome and his advice and techniques really work if your willing to give them an honest try. He has a website as well.
