Hi all,

I have a 15-year-old dog with pretty bad arthritis, who has a hard time with hard wood stairs, because he slips on the wood. Clipping his nails doesn’t help, and neither do rubber runners on the steps. I was advised to get carpet stair treads, which I am considering. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

How about a dog ramp?

If not, perhaps the carpet runners would provide more traction than rubber, which can still be slick.

I am afriad this is common with older dogs, they cannot get a grip quite the same and slip, when this happened to my mums dog we tried everything!! then had to put down a carpet runner, eventually Timmy found even walking on flat floors a problem…my mum bought lots of rubber car mats and put them down and guess what the dog did??yup walked in between them!! so agin it was huge rugs down for the remainder of his life which was before you panic another four years!!!....do you give your dog Cod Liver Oil? this is excellent for arthirtis, my dog Tessa is coming up to thirteen and has been getting it and I see a big difference. I have a 15 year old siberian husky our vet just gave him some chewys called phy-cox js honestly he is running around like a nut. His legs were very wobbly and very bad pain in his mid back and hips now we can groom him and pat him he has been on this for about 2 weeks. yep two weeks best 50.00 I have ever spent. Ask your vet it wont hurt and maybe if he is feeling better with his arthitis his legs may not be so wobbly and the floors wont be an issue

maybe a ramp will be more appropriate…

a visit to vet may also help. the vet can give your dog drug treatments like painkillers or asperins..
