I have a 10 year old mutt with some Shepherd and probably a little hound blood too. He’s gotten pretty lazy over the last year or so. He doesn’t want to run much at all. The vet says he’s basically OK. My question is should I make him exercise more than he wants? Will I hurt him? |

You might want to find something he really likes such as a tennis ball or something that will motivate him to want to play and throw that a few times for him to retrieve. See what really gets him going and don’t overdo it too much. He may have some arthritis starting or something. I wouldn’t push him into it but maybe a short walk or something may get him going. |

You might want to walk him instead of running. |

He might have some arthritis and be feeling sore. Try giving him some glucosamine/chondrotin supplements or even take him to your vets to do a wellness bloodwork work up to make sure there is nothing else wrong with him. If that is all normal then it is probably just his age making him slow down and you shouldn’t push him to the point where he will be sore, but do take him for some walks. Also if he is not as active you do not want to overfeed him, because overweight animals have a hard time especially if they are older and have bad hips or arthritis. |

How much exercise is enough depends on your dog’s age, breed, and health. A 10-month old Irish Terrier puppy is going to need more than a five-year old Whippet. Active breeds need a minimum of 30 minutes of hard aerobic exercise most days of the week, preferably daily. Not enough exercise may result to an over-weight dog.. for more info.. |

Hi, The majority need 30 to 60 minutes a day to stay in good shape. It could be as simple as playing games with you and learning new tricks. Check out this link for more info on getting enough exercise: |

Make it more fun, figure out which games wag your dog’s tail and use them to give him exercise. Refer to this link for more information. |

I would take things slow at first. Something tells me he might be a bit overweight and thus sluggish and in need of…what else? exercise!! Good Luck! |
