I am going to adopt a 1 1/2 year old Bassett Hound next weekend. Does anyone have any advice on how to housetrain an older dog? We REALLY want to keep in inside but he has been outside from the time he was born SO I am not sure if this is possible. Thanks for any suggestions!! |

I adopted a 3 year old Bichon. The key is patience! They can be trained just like a puppy but to me it seems like they just take a little longer to learn it. I think age makes them a little more stubborn. Just make sure you take him/her outside often and when he/she does the duty give them a treat as soon as you come inside. Having a chain or fenced yard to give him/her a little “me” time outdoors for a little while may be a good idea as well if its so used to being outside. Hope that helps. |

I think it is SO great that you both adopted older dogs. It breaks my heart to think of all the homeless adult dogs out there that nobody adopts… |

The good news is it’s fairly easy to teach an old dog this new trick. In fact, adult dogs are easier and faster to housetrain than puppies, especially if you use a crate. Here’s a link from this site: |
