Hello I have two dogs, an American cocker spaniel of 10 and a mixed Saluki of 8.

After we had our three girls (7, 4 and 1), the dogs were always gelous of them so they never bonded and still ignore them. I would love to get an English cocker spaniel, but my husband is worried the older dogs will take over the puppy. Can you help us decide, we have a big home but three dogs is still going to be challenging, but I would really want a companion for my girls! Thanks

Lets say you get a new puppy, and it’s absolutely adorable and your daughters and you take to it immediately, won’t the older dogs get less attention?

Which dog/dogs would your young daughters want to play with, want to walk, and comb etc. etc.

In my never to be humble opinion, a third dog would be too much! It would also be very heartbreaking to have to take the 3rd dog back should you find the two older dogs abuse it, or you find that having 3 young children AND 3 dogs too much. :-)

I have to agree with Rich. In my opinion, 1-y.o. and a 4-y.o. children are way too young to have a dog as a playmate… I’m afraid that if you get a puppy then it will end up getting inadvertently mistreated by your small girls, and if your older dogs were jealous of your kids then they will very likely be jealous of the puppy too, and the poor pup will be getting it every which way… Also, I’m not convinced that the other 2 dogs were/are really “jealous” of your girls. The reason they haven’t bonded with your kids is more likely because the children don’t know yet how dogs should be handled and the dogs are trying to stay out of their way. I suggest that you try to give your 2 existing dogs as much love and attention as possible and teach the girls how to pet and play with them nicely, and wait a few years before bringing home another dog.
