Is it safe to live with a dog while I am pregnant? As far as I know that prenatal development is very important. Everything can be a teratogen. Teratogens are substances that can harm my baby for instance dogs’ hair. I have a story that is a true story. My doctor had two grandchildren who were deaf since they were born. He was trying so hard to heal his grandchildren, but unfortunetly, they could not be healed. He went to Singapore to check them up, and doctors in there told him that the cause was toxoplasma. My doctor’s daughter used to have a lot of dogs inside her house. What do you think about this story? I want to know more about that because everthing has a possibility that we never know. I don’t want to conduct an experiment with my own baby. That’s why I am so curios. Thank you readers.

It is really fine to have a dog or dogs with your baby on the way! Yes this is safe! If your dog never hurts the baby when it is born then it will be fine! My friend has 3 dogs and just had a baby 2 months ago everything is fine! If you have a cat then i would give it to you shelter family or friends! CATS ARE NOT GOOD WITH BABIES!!!! My sister had a cat and THAT STUPID cat, i wanted to KILL it because, okay here goes, my sister had her baby and just brought her baby home, she had a cat and everyone said cats uld be fine with your baby IF your baby does not have asthma, THAT IS WRONG!! My sisters baby was healthy and her cat sucked the milk out of the babies mouth, until the baby could not breath, it as heart breaking. IT WAS a sweet cat until then, my sister was so mad she took the cat to the animal shelter and had them put it down! The baby died. :( it still hurts me to think or see when peoplehave cats and a baby! UGH, that is a true story! PLEASE NO CATS!

Ok….there is a bit of confusion going and mis information going on here….

One, cats do not suffocate babies, this is an old wives tale. Behaviourists have studied this and believe that the infants were already having breathing difficulties and that the cat “heard” the problem before the adult humans (not surprising being cats and dogs have hearing that far surpasses our own) and so Mum or Dad walks in and cat is there staring at baby who is not breathing, cat gets blamed. Most often the child has died, tragically, of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I am so sorry to hear that the your sister lost her baby and also that the cat was euthanized….

Next thing…toxoplasmosis can be transmitted by many ways. The most common is through contaminated food, the same way salmonella can be transmitted. Another way is through contaminated feces, which is why doctors often recommend that during pregnancy someone else in the household should take over cat litter/dog scooping duties. Keeping your hands clean when dealing with food and relegating doo doo duties will keep you safe.
Also, cats and dogs can both be tested for toxoplasmosis.

As for the baby….be sure that you adjust your dog’s lifestyle before the baby comes. Think of what “rules” you may need to change once the infant arrives and start implementing them now. The book “The Power of Positive Dog Training” by Pat Miller has a great chapter on getting ready for baby. I highly recommend it.
And please remember, young children and babies should “NEVER” be left unsupervised with dogs, no matter how well trained or nice your dog is. Kids are unpredictable and that makes the dog’s reactions unpredictable as well.

So there you go, good hygiene, good preparation for puppy and kitty and you are good to go. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
