I have a 6 month old golden retriever who would rather lay on a bed of nails then go into the water is this normal? If so how do I get her to even try?

Our lab/border collie mix was the same. It wasn’t until she was about a yr old that she finally went in, quite by accident. We took her to the park and tried to encourage her, but never forced. My husband was sooo disappointed, unitl one day when she was playing fetch the stick w/ a little boy. Without thinking she jumped right in. My husband came home so excited! Now we can’t keep her out of the water. Have patience and try new games to slowily introduce water. We also had a baby pool on our deck so she could cool off and she didn’t go in until my husband threw her ball in there. If she likes to fetch a favorite toy, I would try that, or if you have a friend with a dog who likes to swim, that might help. Good Luck and don’t give up!

Cracker was 5 months old before she even saw a large body of water. She stood there looking very nervous as the other dogs ran in and out…so…
I rolled up my shorts and headed in…since Cracker is very attached to me she thought this was quite a bad thing that I was ten feet away in the water up to my thighs…she eventually decided that it was more important to be with me than it was to stay dry and she started to come in…she came to me and got right back out several times. Then she came, swam around me and that was that…hard to keep her out of the water now, she loves it.

When Dagwood was a baby we bought him a kiddie pool. This got him accustomed to liking the water. Perhaps he may enjoy one of these games for Smart Cookies
