We are getting a beagle puppy in a couple of weeks. She will be nine weeks. I am going to be crate training her. I don’t know whether to keep her in my bed at night to monitor her, or keep her in her crate. She will be in her crate during the day when I am gone while she is still housetraining and don’t want her to be in it all night too. Not sure what to do… |

I think she would perfer to be in her crate at night. My beagle likes to hide out …at least what mine does. Another possiblity might to certainly confine her to a place of her own ….even our cat likes to sit in her kitty crate that we take when she has to go to the vet etc. |

It’s really just a personal choice but be sure if you let them sleep in your bed that you are ready for them to be there for the rest of their life cause it’s hard to have that little puppy there and then not have the fully grown dog looking to come up too. Most dogs don’t mind sleeping in their crate and my moms dogs simply go in there when they are tired so it’s not a bad place to be in their minds. It is essentially a safe haven or den for them and they know they can rest there and not be disturbed. Ours sleep in bed with us most nights we alternate which one comes up but sometimes they are both up there and it’s a bit snug. |

Bailey chooses where she sleeps. When it’s cool she loves to snuggle up in the bed and nest in the blankets ( she’s a blanket theif actually ) We’ve found that while she will start in the bed she eventually moves to her crate for the majority of the evening. Her crate is her refuge, she naps in it during the day and if she becomes overwhelmed by poking and prodding children she’ll sneak off and can be found in the back of her crate … quite happy to be there. Her crate has always been a safe haven for her, it’s never been used as a punishment device so her time in her crate has usually been very positive … she especially likes it if I put a blanket over the rear half of the crate. |

We brought our first little girl home at nine weeks. We crated her for the first year. Remember, her bladder is tiny and even though crated, needs to be taken out during the day. A walking service will take her for her walk, record her “business” and let you know if there are any problems. NEVER put her in the crate as a punishment. Smitte21 said it best—beagles like dens!! Socialize with her when you get home and include her in family activities. She’ll be pooped and glad to go into her crate! |

BJ is crated at night and he loves it. Just make sure you take them out as soon as you wake up in the morning. I won’t be leaving the door open until he’s at least one, then I’ll have a cat door installed lol |
