Any dog, no matter where you get him or her, will require a large amount of your time. If your parents did not have time for a dog, they should not have gotten one. Sadly to say, that is probably how your dog became a stray in the first place. Also, just because he/she is s stray does not mean they are hard to train. It is said that smart dogs learn how to escape out of their owner’s control and wind up in shelters/on the street. However, you sound very caring and conscientious, so sit your parents down (does not matter how old you are!) and tell them that you want your dog to lead a happy, healthy life. That includes making time for him or her. This dog is a part of your family and deserves to share in your life. I would recommend doggy playdates if you have neighbors who also have dogs, or even taking him/her to a dogpark (be sure that someone is also there with you who can take responsibility for something that happens). Local pet stores are also good resources for extra help: Petsmart has in-store training classes and can give you additional tips.

Be very patient with her and give her all the love you can! You could also try learning more about dogs and their behavior. I have the “Dogs for Dummies” book and think that’s a good place to start. I also found some good info about training on this site: http://dogtime.com/training.html
