I am in the process of doing extensive research on the right pooch for me. While getting a purebred is tempting, I will most likely go to my county animal shelter or Humane Society when the time is right. I am looking for a list of breeds to reference for when I do come across the dogs that will be up for adoption. |

German shepherds and labs are great in the water, but I can’t vouch for not splashing. (GSDs might be a little barky too.) There are plenty of them at shelters. Portugese water dogs can be good swimmers, but i’m not sure if you’ll find many at shelters. Maybe try a local rescue. |

It may be hard to find rescue group that has a rare dog like a Portuguese Water Dog or Otterhound, but sometimes breeders will adopt out adult dogs they’re not using in their breeding program, but who are still great pets. You could try contacting the aKC clubs for these breeds and asking if they can help steer you in the right direction. |

Did you know that the Labrador Retriever originally earned his keep as a “fisherman’s helper?” He hauled nets, fetched ropes, and retrieved fish from the chilly North Atlantic! |
