Our family is looking for its first dog. 2 adults and 2 children ages 14 and 17. The dog needs to be “hypoallergenic” or non-shedding as we have mild allergies. We need a breed of dog that can deal with being left alone for up to 8 hours about 3 times a week without being destructive. We can easily give it a 30 min-60 min walk in the morning and the same after school/work. Do you have any suggestion? |

As far as low shedding (there isn’t a dog that won’t shed even a little), I would consider a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle, if you are willing to have a large dog that is friedly and loyal. I don’t kow how the Poodles deal with being alone but I understand they are the ultimate non-shedding since they have hair instead of fur. Take a look at the information under “breeds” in this website to get an idea of how “independent” the specific breed is. There are also small size hybrids or pure breeds that are low shed. Look at this list for ideas: |

I would recommend a Miniature Schnauzer. That’s what my family has as both my brother and I have allergies. They don’t shed, but do require grooming every 4-6 weeks to keep their coat short. They are very friendly and intelligent. I would recommend checking on the breed description on this website as it is extrememly accurate. Plus Mini’s are a lot less expensive than any Goldendoodle or Labradoodle that I’ve ever seen advertised. |

Can Miniature Schnauzer deal with being alone for 8 hours at a time? That was a breed I was seriously considering but I wasn’t sure if they had a tendancy to be more destructive than other breeds if left alone. |

None of the 5 mini’s that my family has or has had have had any problems with being left alone while we go to work. Sure once in a while they get into something but no more so than any other breed. |
