I REALLY want a dog! I live alone and work long hours. I could bring a dog to work with me most days, but it would be home in my apartment maybe two days a week. There’s no one I can leave a dog with or have come check on one. I need the company!!!!

what do you mean there’s no one who can check on him? hire a dog walker. just two days a week would not be that expensive. it’s really unfair to leave a dog alone for many hours at a time, so arrange for him to come with you to work every day, or check out doggie daycare or a dogwalker.

You might want to check out this listing of dog breeds and how they rate in ease of being left alone:

No matter what breed (or mix) you get, however, no dog does well being left alone for hours and hours on end, so the suggestion to get a dog walker or use doggie daycare on off days is a good one.

The fact that you’re single has little to do with it. The plain fact of the matter is that there are very few households these days where there is anyone home all day. Some dogs do quite well by themselves. You might want to go to a shelter and adopt an adult dog. Shelter personnel can direct you to a dog that already has experience as a latch-key pet. Believe it or not, I was able to get a pre-owned border collie-a border collie, for crying out loud!-that is perfectly happy to stay home alone with the run of the house…as long as she gets a lot of activity, exercise, and attention when I’m home. That would be my biggest concern about leaving a dog home all day alone. Don’t think you can come home and shower and run back out the door to attend to your social life. And please don’t even think about getting a puppy! Doggy daycare doesn’t work too well for a dog who has any issues with other canines. And some poor beasts are just going to figure they’re being dumped again.

dog walkers in New York City are $15 for a 20 minute walk. Its hugely expensive. and if you need one to spend the night, its $80. Definitely consider the cost of pet sitting if you’re considering a dog.

If you are ready for a dog consider adopting one! The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that six to eight million dogs and cats are surrendered to shelters each year. Of those animals, about half are adopted, and half are euthanized.
