We are a family of 6, my parents, two brothers, a sister, and me.

My mom works full time, but my dad is retired so someone will be home the majority of the time. The youngest of my sibilings is 10, my sister is 12, i am 15 and my oldest brother is 20.

We understand that it would be an entire family commitment, however I would like to primarily care for the dog. I will be off to university in 2.5 years, but i am planning to stay in my home town, and if not, my younger siblings would assume my responsibility in the dogs life.

We live in a suburb, have a fenced large fenced yard, and live on a lake.

I think thats all the information i can think of..

so, based on that, my question is, would my family be ready for a dog?

And, if so, any breed suggestions?

I’d like a boxer or an english bulldog, but im open to any suggestions :)

thanks!

Sounds like you have thought this out, but what about the rest of the family? Anyone with allergies? How does the rest of your family feel about getting a dog? Who is going to pay the expense of food, vet check, shots, training, etc.? Are you thinking about a puppy or rescueing a dog? Not trying to burst your bubble but these are all items to consider. Any reasons your family hasn’t had a dog before now?

As far as breed, did you take the dog match quiz here on Dogtime? That quiz suggests the top 4 or 5 breeds to consider based on your responses to various questions plus an extended list of breeds that might fit you and your family. Some dogs need more training or exercise than others. Research the breeds before making a decision based solely on looks.

We have a Coton de Tulear that loves people and for us was very easy to house train. Click on my name if you want to see our little darling and good luck on finding that new furry four-legged family member.
