I’m flying home for the holidays and taking my dog. I’ve never flown with a pet and unsure of the rules. Do airlines require dogs to have paperwork or approval before flying?

Here’s what the article on flying says:
Get a checkup and a health certificate from your veterinarian. This is required by airlines and is also a good idea for making sure your dog is healthy enough for the trip. You’ll also need proof of a rabies vaccine. Keep in mind that the health certificate must be issued within 10 days before you fly.

Somebody was recently asking me if the size of your dog matters when you fly and I think the size actually does make a difference to the airlines.

I don’t fly with my Poodle…. we drive so we can take bio breaks.

I checked out the United Airlines website and saw a higher charge for a large kennel/carrier. You can probably call them and ask them a general question, here’s their number: If your pet will be traveling as carry-on baggage or checked baggage, call United Reservations at 1-800-UNITED-1 (1-800-864-8331).
