Ok, so our 9 week old pup likes and dislikes the crate. Meaning that during the day, she is at work with my boyfriend and stays in the crate at different times throughout the day (voluntarily), naps in it etc. Dream puppy right? At home, it’s a different story. We’ll feed her, play with her right outside the crate, take her out and wait til she pee’s & poo’s – When we get back, we put her favorite toy/snack in the crate 3 feet away from us and have her stay in it until we finish eating etc. She stays in the crate but after she finished with her konk, she starts whining which is ok and we deal with that but then within 2-5 minutes, she compeltely soils her crate. Pee’s & poo’s even tho she just went less than 30-40 minutes prior. After taking puppy for a walk after our dinner, we try it again after cleaning out the crate later in the night. We sense that she has developed seperation anxiety so we put the crate right next to the couch – literally less than 1 feet away from us. We put her in it again wtih just some toys and treats and within 2 minutes, she has soiled the crate all over again. I don’t get it…she is ok with the crate at work but not at home??? |

I’ve just had a look at your other threads. You certainly have the right idea but a puppy this young has very little if any bowel and bladder control. It could be that 30-40 minutes is simply too long for her body to hold it..The whining to go out is important…if you are worried about letting her out when she whines becoming a habit all you need to do is leash her and take her to her pee spot..no play, no walks no nothing. Wait for and then praise her business and then put her right back into the crate. This way she will learn that whining means a pee break, not freedom from the crate. How often does your BF take the pup out when they are at work? Does he spend anytime “NOT paying attention” to her? So many questions..lol. Give us some more info and I may be able to suggest some things…. |

Thanks for the reply! My BF takes her out about 6-8 times a day – usually right after a nap or anywhere from 20-30 minutes after she eats/drinks water. He does spend time away from her because the meetings he has to attend etc., so there is play time and there is also independant time but there are people always visiting the pup… We put the crate on the trunk at the edge of the bed with the door open. We have discovered that allowing her to go back and forth between the crate and the bed gives her some sense of security and she sleeps throughout the night generally without any accidents. By that, i’m pretty convinced that puppy can hold it – but holds it on her terms. |

Separation anxiety has little to do with training or discipline; the behaviors are a result of the severe panic your dog feels when you’re not there. Hope this link will help you. |
