Hi,

Can anyone give me a definition on the “ven” and “punir”.

Thanks. Trying to understand more in positive and negative reinforcers.

Perhaps Mr. or Mrs. Dunbar could explain briefly. My guess is that it is reward and punish? But need more definition.

Thanks again!

Hi there Cowgirlchick,

Ah, you’ve been reading about the poisoning the cue study!

My understanding is that these two made-up words were chosen arbitrarily as cue words for teaching a dog the action of coming when called in two different ways.

For the study the made-up word “ven” was used as the verbal cue when the recall was trained with positive reinforcement only and the word “punir” was used as the verbal cue when recall was trained in a less-pleasant manner.

The words themselves have no definition or meaning other than what was attached to them for the study.

The study attempted to determine whether how a behavior cue is trained poisons the actual behavior.

Have you read Dr. Pamela Reid’s Excel-erated Learning? It is the bible of learning theory as it applies to dog training.

Cheers,

Kelly

Thank you so much for responding so quickly.

I am enlightened. Now I can proceed to take in the information on the “poisoned” cue.

Thanks again!
