how do i stop my dogs from digging during the day when i’m at work? what products should i use to keep them from digging or wanting to dig? we live in an area where you don’t have to worry about dog theft so don’t respond if your going to say leave them in a crate in the house. they should be able to run around and be free. thanks. |

hi,, Dogs need to dig. There are a dozen good canine reasons for digging. If you plan to leave your dog unattended in the yard for long periods of time, then beforehand you must spend some time with the dog outside, teaching it the rules of the yard, for example, to not even walk on the garden, let alone dig in it. |

Like many undesirable canine behaviors, destructive habits usually develop because a dog is bored, lonely, or both. tire her out before living her or hire a dog walker. if he still wont stop digging, why not provide him a legal digging spot? a small portion of the yard (away from the rose bushes) where she can dig to her heart’s content. Cover the area with sand or dirt and bury treats and toys there to entice her to begin digging. When you find her mining in an “illegal” area, immediately interrupt her, show her to the appropriate spot, and praise her for digging in the right place. http://dogtime.com/chewing-digging-behavior.html goodluck! |

Different breeds dig for different reasons, so before looking for solutions, it’s important to establish why your dog digs. Boredom is a common culprit. When there’s nothing to hold your dog’s attention, he may fill his time by digging up the yard. Check this link. |

Some folks swear that if you put dog poop in the digging spot hole and cover it up, then the dog will find the booby-prize and not dig there anymore. Does it work? Maybe. But he’ll probably just start digging somewhere else instead. I think it’s better to let him have a digging spot and enoourage him to dig there whenever he gets the urge. Some dogs dig because they’re bored. Some dogs dig to have a cool spot to lie down in. Some dogs dig because at one time they uncovered a critter and they keep hoping there will be another one. Some dogs just dig because it’s just plain fun. You can address some of the reasons, but a digger will probably always be a digger, so let him have his own “sandbox” to play in. |
