Is a retractable leash a bad idea? I’ve been walking my puppy on it (he’s 4 and 1/2 months), and the only thing I’m concerned about is that it does seem to encourage pulling at the leash. I call out “watch out” when he’s about to get to the end of the allowance, and he’s pretty much figured that out (except in the case of chasing after rabbits) so that he stops or slows down and doesn’t jerk really hard. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience or advice with this. Thanks.

Hi Crystal,

if the retractable leash works for you and your dog, there is nothing wrong with this. It looks like your puppy is a small breed, so maybe pulling is not such a big concern for you.

We have one and use it when we take our puppy swimming in the creek, so she can go far away but we still have control. We don’t use it for walking her, we like her to walk on the left side, heeling, but a lot of people use them for walking.

My concern about the retractable leash is when there are other people around; if your dog goes running around and pulls hard, the leash can get so tight that it could hurt a by-passer. You may notice on the leash, there is a warning for severing fingers if your hands get wrap on the leash.

You get to decide how you walk your dog, so as long as you are careful with tangling, you should be fine.

I love those leashes, it gives you more control. I have had nothing but luck with them. I have always had big dogs that need to be under control!

I got one for my Chihuahua when we brought him home at 7 weeks old. It was fine when he was a baby but now he is 4 months old and all he does is bite on the end attached to his harness. I bought a regular lease and he never tries to bit it. The other day I put the old retractable lease on him to see how he did and he backed away like he did not like it. I took him out anyway and all he did was roll on the ground and bit the end. For some reason he hates it. I personally liked it, so may have to buy a thicker one and try again.

Hey Crystal,

I originally purchased a retractable leash for the purpose of training my rottie to go to the “doggie pottie.” Rotties (and most other dogs—as I’ve learned) are private potters, so the retractable leash gives him the freedom to find that “special spot” but still be contained on the leash. I still use traditional leashes/leads for walks, jogs, etc. The trick to the retractable is learning how to give slack and take back slack quickly—so to answer your question, I think retractables are great—it’ll get better trust me. God Bless!

Hi, although a retractable leash may seem flexible, there are actually different types of leash suited for different behaviors and different locations. For a detailed discussion on the pros and cons of various types, here’s a link:

hi

i don’t think a retractable leash is right for your puppy

maybe a very slender leash because you would have more control

over your puppy and talking about more control your better off

with a slender leash and a harness
