You can try using the clicker method. See Karen Pryor’s website and read some of her books.

Does she bark at all? Maybe that’s a good thing. You don’t want her to turn into a barker.

If your dog doesn’t bark at all, then it’s probably a better idea to keep her from barking. Once dogs learn to find their voices, it can be a nightmare to stop them from using this way to get their own way or to just get attention. I would seriously consider that aspect first before you plan anything else.

Admittedly, dogs barking is the largest deterrent for any potential burgler, so if you are looking for home security, it’s definitely a plus, just make sure that you allow the time to train your dog not to bark as well.

One of the best methods is to get your dog to bark out of frustration, when all else fails, a dog will try another way to get something, barking will naturally occur.

Tie your dog to a post, get her the most tastiest treat you can find, and just have it out of range from her, she’ll try and get to it but after a good few minutes, she should eventually just bark out of pure frustration of not getting her mouth near the treat.

Anticipate her barking and get ready to feed her as soon as she does bark. Repeat this a couple of times and she will very quickly learn that using her voice will result in a treat. Don’t over extend her on her first day, 10-15 minutes of training is ideal.

Make as much of a fuss as you can and keep her interested to get the best results. Just be aware that it may be a lot harder to stop her barking once she gets going!

Best of luck.

If your dog likes food, try to tease him with a little fried bacon. Let him smell it, then move it away from him. If he makes any sound at all use your marker word and give him the bit of bacon..Continue this, but make him work harder for the reward. No matter what noise he makes, reward him. Eventually he will bark.
