my 12 month old daschund loves people, dogs of all sizes and pretty much everything, but she s scared of kids and barks a them. unfortunatley i dont have any kids around for her to play with to get her used to them. any suggestions on how to break this habbit/fear she has?

Sorry to see no one has come along and answered your question for you!!

Carry some really yummy fave treats with you (hotdog slices, jerky, liver bits) and head off to your local park. Everytime you see a child in the distance, watch to see just how close you can get before the behaviour starts. Then back up a bit…have your pup sit and get him to look at you. Give him a treat..in fact give him several. Move a few feet closer…same thing. (It is helpful if you have not fed him before you go..he needs to be hungry and the treats can become part of his caloric intake for the day ..no fat dachsies!!)

Once you have him looking at you for treats whenever he sees a kid, try to get a child (with permission from parents) to toss a treat or two his way while just walking by at a safe distance. The child is not to talk or approach the dog…just toss a treat. Eventually you should be able to get closer to children and HOPEFULLY he will one day let a child give him a treat in person…but this is only after much work on the desensitization. Once setback for him can mean a bite to a child.

Do this a couple of times a week and be consistent. Soon he should be associating children with goodies instead of fear.

Edited to add…I used He instead of She…sorry!!
