My beagle is now a indoor dog and has been for awhile, however it seems that when we leave home or leave out the room he likes to use the bathrrom on the floor even though when we are home we take him out at least every 3 three hours to potty. It frustrates me for him to use the bathroom on my hard wood floors . Any suggestion ? Help!

Hi,

I guess this site will help you in dealing with your problems and in crate training your dog. I hope this will help you two.

Hi Snoopy Patrick,

Hooray for you for bringing your Beagle inside. An dog who is allowed indoors can really become a true companion and part of the family.

However, just because he’s inside now does not mean he’s house trained and it most certainly seems like your dog is not yet clear on the concept of eliminating outside only.

You are off to a great start by taking him out frequently, but that alone won’t do it, as you can see. Now is the time to teach him to hold it when he’s inside and to make haste with his waste when he’s in the great outdoors.

The best way to do that is to confine him to a smaller area such as a crate when you are not keeping an eye on him in the house. During this phase he should never be free in the house out of your sight. Crating your dog when he’s unsupervised for a few months while you get him on the right track is the best way to go because every time he relieves himself in the house without interruption the habit is getting stronger.

It is also really important to reward him for going in the right place (outside!) so you should take him out and stay with him to see him go and then reward him with a treat, playtime and/or some free time with you in the house now that he is empty.

Good luck!
