My dog is almost 1 years old and she is well-behaved…for the most part. She is extremely affectionate…almost to a fault, she just wants attention all the time and loves people, other dogs…everyone! The only problem is that when I or anyone else goes to pet her…she is constantly trying to lick. Licking sometimes is OK but when its all the time it gets kind of annoying..people dont want to be licked constantly! is there anything at all that I can do about this? |

I have the same problem with my shitzu-Maltese. Then my other dog, Peek-a-poo licks constantly at a spot next to his butt. He doesn’t lick his butt I don’t think, it just looks like a spot just right next to the butt. |

I have a licker too. I personally don’t mind doggie-kisses except on the face, but my family complains that she is licking their toes and legs or hands. I have found that giving her the command “leave it” which she knows and “quiet” which I also use when she is in our laps, works pretty good. However, I had to teach the others to use those commands and use them correctly (don’t repeat it over and over again and catch her when she’s doing the right thing and say “good dog” which she recognizes as praise and likes). Also, lots of exercise to get the wiggles out of her and calm her down. She’s improving slowly. I think as she matures she’ll be less needy and grow more confident with her peeps. Also: I use toys and treats to distract her attention. |

Excessive licking of people or other dogs may mean that the dog is very timid and is trying to show his/her submissivness. (IMO better a licker than a biter!) If the dog is constantly licking himself then I would look into the possibility of allergies. Or it might be just a nervous tick… |

Welcome to the lick club. Both ShiraKhan and Kalli have offered me the same good suggestions and we’re working on improvements with our little one. It is normal pack animal behavior, but they are living in a pack of humans that do not appreciate nor want such attention. Good luck. |
