I have two goldens … one 12 years of age … the other 5. The older one has chosen to dig in our yard. Am afraid that the younger is learning from the older one and is following suit. Are there any tricks to keep them from digging?

Also … thinking about buying a wireless dog fence and using it to “prevent them from going in an area” as opposed to “keeping them in an area”. Your thoughts please ..

Re-direct into a behavior you want them to do. The more interactive the better. Recall and then reward when they come. Give your dog a taks to do rather than no dig.

Teach your dog what you want. When you do this, what you don’t want typically fades away.

You can read here about destructive digging and how to treat the problem. http://dogtime.com/chewing-digging-behavior.html

I know of some people who designate an area of the yard for digging, and let their dogs go wild in that spot – but the rest of the yard is off-limits.

One great solution we have found – arrange for a load of river sand – place in a heaped pile on the lawn (preferably not too far from where he enjoys digging) To encourage the dog to this spot bury some dog treats into the sand.
Dogs will have a great time digging and rolling around on the pile, you will also notice how much they love laying on top of their sand castle.
They will also spread the sand over time across the lawn which is great for the garden. Once the sand is spread arrange for another load. For each load you can move the pile further away from the house.
Fun for the dogs and good for the garden. Hope this is useful.

Dogs that are digging are probably bored. Best to redirect their energy into constructive activities such as un-stuffing food-stuffed chewtoys.

Feed your dog out of toys such as Kongs and Premier Busy Buddy toys, these products are designed to hold food and keep your dog busy for hours.

Also make sure they are getting plenty of daily exercise such as long walks or games of fetch. Swimming is good too.
