Hi, i have a rottweiler puppy that will be 5 months if a few days and plan to get him fixed sometime next week, and i was wondering if he’ll grow a bit bigger after i neuter him at 5month old? ive heard from ppl that has rotties that says yes but dont get him fixed if hes nearly almost a year old. this site ive read that says after 8 weeks before puberty, so i was wondering at 5 months is that still before puberty? thanks for reading my question, hopefully i get some answears asap…

Hi.
Large breed dogs should be neutered later than small breeds. It used to be we neutered all dogs at 6-7 months but have discovered that unless the dog is having hormone related behaviour issues it is best to wait until about a year. Testosterone does relate to growth and bone density, without it the pup will still grow for a while but will not fulfill his potential growth.

You may want to discuss the ramifications of this with your breeder. Thank you for being responsible and getting him neutered, but five months is a bit early as long as he is temperamentally fine.

Well, a guy that lives on my streets told me yesterday that he neutered his male rottie around 5-6 months of age, and he said his rottie grew big, hmmm…..im going to neuter him but just dont know when is the best time, i was going to wait till hes about a year old or close to a year old so that hes fully grown, but i wanted a stocky big boned rottie. when he was about 7-8 weeks old his body was short and big boned for that age, but as he grew older he looks like hes going to be one of those tall rotties. when is the best time to neuter him?
so if i neuter him at 6 months ( as the vet says they recommend neutering at 6 months ) will he still grow smaller? ive seen some male rotts that we’re neutered at around 5-6 months where they look like a females ( the body type ).
so when is the best time to neuter him?

A lot of muscle growth is based on testosterone so if you want a well muscled rottie waiting may encourage more muscle growth. Rotties vary a lot in body type, based on genetics and growth patterns. Were his parents stocky type rotties? If so then he is probably genetically more likely to be bigger and stockier, if not he may end up lanky.
My vet used to recommend neutering at 6 months but since I worked with him (eight years ago) a lot more information has come out about the pros and cons of early neutering. Maybe do some more research on veterinary sites to see what these pros and cons are and decide from there.
