Could some of the members of this site tell me how much did you pay for spaying your female dog? My vet charges a range from $275-$395 depending on the dog’s weight + $65 for complete bloodwork prior to the surgery. I just would like to get an idea. Thanks!

Sometimes you can find a animal shelter that spays and neuters dogs. I got my one cat neutered at a local shelter, and I spent less money.
Its a good idea to get the bloodwork done.

Different locales will have different prices so it is hard to judge. I spent almost 700 for spay and dewclaw removal on Cracker. This is probably more than most vets in my area but I explicitly trust my vet ( I worked with him for 8 years) and would not let half of the other vets in my area near my dog, regardless of prices.

There are many different factors that go into pricing in vet clinics. Overhead is one, business taxes in different cities, updated equipment (laser surgery etc) and just plain quality of care.

It would be much better for you to ask around your area to see what the going prices are, get recommendations for different vets from other dog owners, check out low cost spay/neuter clinics etc.
More expensive does not mean better, but neither does cheaper. If you have a breed that is not a good surgery risk, all the more reason to find a very experienced and trustworthy surgeon. Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) may be considered a “routine” procedure, but it is still a major abdominal surgery, much more invasive and involved than a neuter and requires quality care.

Find a vet you trust. Ask what all the cost includes..a breakdown is very helpful. And yes..always and I mean ALWAYS get preop bloodwork done. Many a serious issue has been caught in preop bloods, that if the surgery had been done the animal could have been at serious risk.

Actually if you contact an animal clinic or Humane Society and ask for names of low cost spay or neuter clinics it is not that expensive. Here in St. Louis, OPSPOT (Google them) lists low cost spay/neuter programs and the Humane Society also has clinics. The object of pet adoption sites is to find homes for dogs and to encourage people to spay and neuter! They don’t adopt out dogs that have not been altered.
