I have a 12 week old chi / pug mix. How soon can I have her spayed? Should I wait for her first heat?

Spay her now! No need to wait. The “waiting until her first heat” theory was tossed out years ago.

Yes, the sooner the better at this point!

Spaying before her first heat is actually beneficial. Pups can be spayed anytime after they are 8 weeks old, and if it’s before their first heat cycle the benefits are even stronger.

I wouldn’t spay her this early but yes please spay her before her first heat cycle. There is also some evidence that spaying too early (ie. 8 weeks old) can cause bladder control problems. I would wait till she is at least 4-5 months old. She will not go into heat at the earliest till 6 months.

Boys can be neutered when ‘marbles” are there. That’s about 3 months (sometimes sooner). Girls may need to wait longer. Because their “parts” are so close to the bladder at such a young age an inexperienced vet in early spays can cause an incontinent problem by knicking the bladder. An experienced vet in early spays will usually not cause this but it is always a risk.

I agree with smitte21; you don’t have to wait until her first cycle but you don’t want to do it too early because of bladder damage. We asked our vet and he said 4-5 months old.

Your vet should be the one who tells you when the right time is to spay your dog—not people you know nothing about on the Internet. There are far too many self-made “experts” on the Internet, and most of the advice they give either is them parroting some agenda they’ve been duped into believing or in accord with their own personal agenda. Spaying is a medical procedure and requires medical advice.

Hi,

Unless you plan to responsibly breed your female, spay her. Here is a page wherein you can understand more about spaying your female dog.

Czecz,
I personally think that you should spay your female as soon as possible. Here are the benifits of spaying or neuteuring…
-your pet stops thinking about breeding
-there a lot of abanded pets out there, I don’t think u want to add more pups accidentily
-spaying usually costs less then shots for all the newborns
-etc.
I’m glad you are making a wise choice, best of luck!

I agree with Chan. I get my animals spayed or neutered when they tell me it’s time, generally between 5-6 mos, depending on the size and breed of the dog.

i think it’s really best to spay your puppy before her first heat. but i’ve done some readings that there should be a ‘healthy’ period as to when spaying should be done.
