MY BEAUTIFUL 10 LB. 3 YEAR OLD SHIHTZU (PIPPI)HAD PANCREATITIS A FEW WEEKS AGO. SHE SPENT NEARLY 3 DAYS IN THE HOSPITAL. I WAS BESIDE MYSELF. THE VET DIDN’T KNOW HOW SHE GOT IT. PANCREATITIS CAN BE DEADLY. FROM ALL MY RESEARCH, THERE WAS ONE COMMON THREAD: IT USUALLY HAPPENS IN MIDDLE AGE AND FROM A HIGH FAT DIET WHICH BASICALLY MEANS TABLE SCRAPS. PIPPI HAS NEVER HAD TABLE SCRAPS. I ALSO FEED HER"HEALTH WISE" WHICH HAS NO PRESERVATIVES.

HAS ANY ONE ELSE HAD A DOG YOUNGER THAN MIDDLE-AGE WHO HAS HAD PANCREATITIS? I AM STILL SO SCARED THAT I WATCH HER ALL THE TIME.

LUCKILY I HAD PET INSURANCE SO MONEY WAS NOT A PROBLEM. (NOT THAT I WOULD EVER LET MONEY GET IN THE WAY.

Obviously, you care for your dog very much. She sounds pretty ok to me. It’s you however that I sense need reassurance that she will be just fine. To ease your mind on how to properly take care of your Pippy who is recovering from a surgery, you might want to check out the link below. There’s a discussion on how you can make her more comfortable while recuperating:

I have a 18 mos old maltipoo who has been suffering with flare ups of pancreatitis since June. She never eats table food and is on a strict diet but continues to suffer with flare-ups. My vet really has no idea what is causing the flare-ups so I will be taking her to a specialist later this month. Does anyone know if maltipoos are prone to this? I am glad that you have pet insurance because I do not and treatment is not cheap. Good luck!

Hi, my cockapoo had a bout of pancreatitis about 6 months ago and also spent 3 days in hospital. We had noticed that he did throw up a lot but were always told by our vet that was what dogs do. Luckily we had changed vets, and when he was really sick our vet was just fantastic. He told us our dog was born with a predisposition to pancreatitis. Benji is now on a low fat, low protein diet. Low fat is not the problem – low protein is more difficult. Everything has to be at least less than 20% protein, less is better. His meals consist of Hills Science special diet dry food and sometimes some cooked pasta or rice and/or plain cooked chicken mixed in. He is so much better! We thought he was just maturing and slowing down – now we know he was sick for ages! He has so much more energy now. Apparently cockerspaniels are prone to pancreatitis – poodles aren’t, not sure about shitzus and maltese. Our vet told us to go easy on treats like pigs ears, any “rich” food etc. It also means absolutely no bones: no chicken necks, no oxtails, nothing. Benji still gets pigs ears on special occasions (birthday and christmas), but otherwise we are really watching his food/treats. Hope this helps a little.

I have a ridgeback and she has had an episode of Pancreatitis this week…for the 1st (and hopefully last) time but I am very unclear on what to feed her. The vet gave us some prescription food but she just moves it around the bowl w/her nose and won’t eat it. She never gets table scraps and eats regular dog food but she wants nothing to do w/what the vet gave us… I would really like to think that this won’t be an ongoing issue but from everything i am reading, it looks like most dogs have continued “flare ups”… has this been all of your experiences???

My dog is 2 1/2 and has been suffering from intermittent vomiting for about 6 months. We had taken him back to our vet and couldn’t get an answer for what was wrong. One vet thought it might be a food allergy. Rather than completely change his diet and remove everything, I switched to a sensitive stomach food. It seemed to help. We just moved to Texas and the “flare ups” are happening more often. It got worse this past week to the point where he was not just vomiting bile but his entire meal. I had already taken him to the vet and the initial blood tests appear normal. Further testing was sent to Texas A&M to check for pancreatitis. The vet did x-rays and ultrasound today and saw inflammation in his intestines. We are waiting for the blood tests to come back from Texas A&M next week which will tell us more certainly if this is pancreatitis. In the meantime I started feeding him Purina Veterinary Diet EN and he ate it like his normal kibble. He is also on some pain medication and something else to help calm his stomach.
