Does anyone know if dogs can get carotinemia from eating too much orange food? I’ve been feeding our shepherd about 1 cup/day for a couple years to keep his weight down and just happened to think of that. Would that be too much Vitamin A? |

I’m not sure about too much orange food. I’ve heard from several sources that carrots and pumpkin, in sensible amounts, are good for dogs. How much is “sensible” is anyone’s guess. |

My trainer has a;ways advised green beans to bulk out food for diet control. Cheap [get canned on sale], adds roughage, and other vitamins. |

One of Dagwood’s favorite foods is carrots. He’s so funny crunching them. Pumpkin was suggested by his vet for bouts of diarrhea. This dog will eat ANYTHING that hits the floor (i.e. dryer sheets, rubber bands) so we have to be very careful. |

Wow, I was told some years ago by a vet that pumpkin actually has a laxative effect on dogs. |

Not a laxative for Daggie! Just the opposite…...he’s able to have normal bowel movements. Weird huh? |

The pumpkin is actually a good supplement to keep their anal glands clear from what I have been told. I believe you are supposed to give them a tablespoon or so with each meal. |

I’ve also heard that pumpkin is good to feed dogs who have a habit of eating their own poo…I guess it doesn’t smell as tempting to them! |

Pumpkin is the wonder drug for doggy tummies. I’ve read that it works for both diarreah and for constipation, something to do with short chain fatty acids that are produced by the intestinal bacteria acting on the pumplin. Bottom line is that it soothes the lining of the stomach and intestines while producing the bulk dogs need for an easy to pass firm stool. For some reason, dogs find it quite tasty. Yuck…. |

Here’s a recipe with pumpkin puree. It has yogurt in it too, so doubly good for the digestion. |
