hi, i am asking about my dog Sheila. i got her back in January she will be a year in November. when she was a little puppy, not to long after we got her, she started to scratch her mouth. it was not too bad at first. after a few months she got worse and started to actually make her gums bleed. the vet said she was cutting teeth, i shouldnt worry. then she started to scratch her ears, i took her back to the vet and found out she had an ear infection, i got it taken care of. went back after two weeks and she was better, no more infection. but she still scratched her mouth and ears. not to long after that she started rubbing her eyes with her front paws. and then she started chewing on the inside of her front legs, it is around the elbow part. she chewed away her fur there. after i noticed the eyes and the front legs i made another appointment with my vet. within that time (my appointment was a ways away) she started to use her back legs to scratch her eyes too… i bought her a cone. she was making scabs on the top of her head, making the corners and the brow of her eyes bleed and still tries to scratch her mouth. the newest thing is she is using her back legs to scratch her armpits on her front legs. the left on just looks like skin and lost fur, but the right in real red and blotchy. i cant tell if its blood or not. if i try to lift her or if i play with her and grab her under arm she yelps. when i talked to the vet about the intensity she uses to scratch her pretty much told me i was over estimating…and by the way my puppy doesnt have fleas.. i do apologize for the long post but this puppy is my baby, it breaks my heart to see her like this and i cant do anything to help her. she is a chocolate lab and Australian Shepard mix.

Your dog might be suffering from allergy. Allergies are common among canines, you have to figured out what’s triggering the allergy. There are various ways on how to treat allergies. Hope this link will help you.

how do the vets test for allergies?

It sounds like she has some sort of allergy. Allergies in dogs manifest themselves though itchy, irritated skin. It can be from just about anything, but many times they are caused by food or grass. From what you have said about your vet, I would get a second opinion, or ask for a referral to a specialist. If she continues to scratch and cause open wounds, she can develop a staph infection. Good luck and please keep us posted as to how she is doing.

It is definitely an allergy of some sorts. If you didn’t change the pups diet I wouldn’t think it’s from the food as it is mostly from the environment. Unfortunately many vets only treats the symptoms and not the illness by checking to see what is actually causing the issue.

Another allergy besides food, and pollen, grass and sorts are chemicals used around the home such as carpet cleaners. My service dog is allergic to such things as it only happens when we are out and about.

But rabies vaccinations and other types of vaccinations could also cause such reactions. When was the pup vaccinated last? Just things to think about. But in the meanwhile you could use proxide to clean it up and then an all natural cream too. You could request a skin and blood test as well to maybe help figure what is causing the allergy which could be two allergies not just one.
