It’s impossible to get my dog to take her medication. I’ve tried to hide it in peanut-butter, baby food, sausage, you name it. But she always eats the food spits out the pill. Help!

I had the same problem with my old Airedale. What finally worked was taking an entire mini hot dog, making a small cut in the middle, and squeezing in the pill. She scarfed down the hot dog too fast to notice the medicine….

this is such a good topic. I found when I hide the pills in cheese or some treat, they spit the pill back out. What works best for me is simply putting the pill on the back of the tongue and holding his snout tight for a second. I may be lucky in that my dog has a longer snout.

If treats don’t work, and you have to resort to the “snout” method as todd described, you might try one of the following to induce a swallow:

1) hold the snout closed, then blow softly on the dog’s nose until it swallows, or;

2) hold the snout closed, and with one hand gently stroke underneath the bottom of the dog’s chin and down its throat until you have made sure it swallows.

There is also a treat you can get at some pet stores call Pill Pockets. They are specially made little pockets that you put the pill into and then mush the end closed and the dogs love them. They come in liver and I think beef flavored. Not cheap but they work like a charm.

try putting it in liverwurst or using peanut butter put the pill in the p.b. and also some on your pets nose. the licking action makes them swallow.

I don’t know if this would help if the dog in question is a dainty eater. I just use a piece of bologna. If it’s a big pill, I split it so I can do two wraps. The lunchmeat is so slick it just slides right down the hatch. My dog gulps it down without chewing so she never even knows that I hid a “nasty” in there.

I would go to my vet and get a pill gun. It is a tube with a plunger and soft rubber tip on the end. The tip is slit so you can insert the pill and the tube is long enough to get the pill to the back of the mouth. I uaually use a little peanutbutter or cream cheese on the end of the gun. When the dog goes for the treat put the pill gun in the back of the mouth and push the plunger. The pill usually goes down before the dog realizes it.

Greeenies makes Pill Pockets in different flavors, while hot dogs and cheese are bad for dogs try a healthy treat like Pill Pockets. Pill guns create stress. You can get Pill Pockets at any pet supply store

My dog also loves the Greenie Pill pockets, he thnks they are the best treat ever. I buy the ones designed for capsules instead of the ones for caplets, because they are bigger so he has more of a treat. It is so funny to watch him when I get the package out, all his attention is on me and he will do anything to get his “treat”! I also do the back of the tongue, stroke under the chin method for smaller pills. Good luck.

hi sylvia..

try giving your pup liquid medications, ask your vet for alternative medications…

there are also many of those herbal medications with same natural remedies may be effective in treating your dog for a variety of ailments, if used in the right ways.
