My dog smells so bad. People have told me that if I wash him too often his natural oils will be stripped – making it impossible for his fur to self-clean. However, he smells so bad. Just one week after washing the smell is intolerable. He’s a big dog and washing him is a major project – getting him in the tub, keeping him there, washing, drying etc, Any tips?

hi

deodotizing is an excellent idea for a dog who has just rolled in a dead rodent or fresh poop, deodorizing shampoos may not always be powerful enough to alleviate.

dogs don’t require daily scrub downs like we do, they do need regular baths—but just how regular depends on several factors, such as the dog’s environment and type of coat.

If you haven’t taken the dog to the vet for the odor problem, I would suggest that you do so. It might be some hidden cause for the bad smell other than a bathing issue. There is a product called Dinovite that is supposed to help with this problem and itching, but I could never get my dog Rocky to eat it with his food. Talk to your vet about the problem you are having. Dogs shouldn’t smell bad.

Earthbath makes soap-free, pH-balanced shampoos they guarantee won’t irritate your pup’s skin. All are biodegradable, and all can be used along with topical flea control products. Refer to this link.

Big dogs may need bathing as frequently as once a week. More so, if he/she has thick coats. By clicking on the link below, you’ll find answers and some tips to handle this problem.

Be sure you are bathing properly, with the proper shampoo and equipment. (I just wrote an article about this in the “Ask the Groomer” section of my blog at http://www.groomerblog.com)

Also, do take him to your vet to rule out yeast infection, etc. Those can cause a stink. And ideally, you don’t want to bathe your dog more than once every two weeks. The longer, the better!

Good luck, and HTH!
