I read in a book that dogs with under coats need to be dried with dog blowdryers, beacause if you let there fur air dry it will matt. Is this true? My dogs coat is medium legnth and has a thick under coat.

Hey Swinkguy, in my opinion it truly depends on the dog’s coat length and how you dog will respond to the blow dryer most importantly, if Lady is not annoyed by the sound of the blow dryer and sits still while she’s being groomed then I say go for it…as for me my 10 month old rottie hates the blowdryer, so I have to towel dry his coat(which is short & medium thick) and brush it for about an hour or so after his bath—he likes to be brushed and massaged with the towel but he absolutely hates the blowdryer. Good luck!

Hi there, dog’s coats are varied. i think it depends on what type of coat the dog has and the maintenance it will require. There are coats need little care. In your case, your dog has medium thick coat, for me, it should be brushed a couple of times a week. For more information on how to keep your dog’s coat healthy, you can check out the link below:

hello..

grooming your dog i the best way to care for his/her coat…

regular brushing wit soft bristles will do..

any dog with matted or dirty hair or a naturally thick coat may be more prone to hot spots—a bacterial infection officially called pyrotraumatic dermatitis, or moist eczema…

here’s an informative site.. try cheking it out…

Hey Swinkguy,

It’s not the “air drying” that will cause the coat to mat, it’s the “not brushing.” Be sure to use a good undercoat rake on a dog with thick undercoat before the bath, and then after the dog is dry.

Note: Using a force dryer will certainly help to blow out more of the undercoat, but it is not necessary if the dog is properly raked/combed.
