We love our new foxhound, but she has a stronger dog odor than we are used to. Are there any good home remedies that can help to reduce a dog’s natural smell? I’ve bathed her every week so far, but she still smells really strong.

I have a hound cross of my own and they certainly do have a musky and stronger smell than most dogs. Bathing her every week may actually make it worse.

Have you considered her diet? My boy Claude’s coat and smell changed completely once I took him off of grain. There are plenty of high-quality grain-free dog foods available nowadays. Such as Evo, Timberwolf, Wellness CORE, etc

It might be worth a try, some dogs really become yeasty when they eat grain, especially wheat and corn.

I have 2 hound mixes and have found that after bathing you can create a paste of baking soda and water and apply for 5 min and then a through rinse will help temporarily. Also if there is a dollar general store in your area they sell a product called pawfume for $2 a bottle and it is wonderful. works as well as any high cost product i have used. hope this helps.

Thanks for all the advice! I found an herb-based spray at Wal-Mart that makes Madison smell good for about 10 hours. :)
