We are in the process of researching puppies to add to our family. We were pretty much set on a Pug until I learned of their shedding. Do they shed a tremendous amount or what? Any information would be helpful, I am a little worried because everyone we talk to mentions it. Thank you. |

Hey! Have you tried out the Dog Finder Matchup on this site? You answer a list of multiple choice questions and it gives you a list of breeds that may work-out best for you! It even asks you how much fur bothers you…you may find another breed that would work out better for you…here’s the page: http://dogtime.com/matchup/start |

Hi, Based from the list of dogs that don’t shed that much, Pug is considered on the 2nd category in terms of Amount of shedding (5 – being the highest; 1- being the lowest amount of shedding). |

I know the DogTimers are telling you that Pugs don’t shed much, but they do. My mother owned a Pug for years, and I groom quite a few of them, so I can tell you that they are shedders! I’d say they are somewhere between your Rottie and Cocker in the amount of shedding. If you really are set on getting a Pug, there are things you can do to decrease the amount of hair that you deal with: Be sure to feed a high-quality food. Take your Pug to the groomer once a month and let them know you’d like them to help you with the shedding. We groomers have special tricks up our sleeves ;) There are special shampoos that help pull out existing loose hair, and force-drying will blow out the rest of it (all over our shop!) so that you won’t have to deal with it in your house. Also, you can have your pug shaved down… Pugs have very thick hair, and a shave will not get rid of the hairs but will make them smaller and less noticeable when they shed out. Good luck! I really love the Pugs I work with. They are so funny! -Kendra- http://www.groomerblog.com |
