i was told to only bath them once a month and then give flea control

Yeah, you want to give them a bath at least once a month, and also you’ve got to brush their coat at least once a week. If you do it more often though it’ll be easier to brush each time.

That sounds like a good recommendation. Ideally, you don’t want to bathe a dog more than once every two weeks. Once a month is even better! Use a good quality shampoo, and be sure to read the directions on you flea prevention related to administration after a bath. Some products require that you wait a couple of days after the bath to apply.
