I recently bought an 11 week old Peke a poo at a pet store. The cage said “Peke a poo”. Oh what a cute darling! To make a long story short, I’ve been looking at Peke a poo images on the web. Mine has all the basic characteristics but he has more of a “wire” looking coat than poodle thick coat. Can anybody help me to discern??

Hey Angie,

The reason your pup has a wire look to him, is because dogs that are sold in pet stores come from puppy mills. Unfortunately, there is nothing “purebred” about any dog from a pet store.

Even though the dog comes with “papers” does not make it a purebred dog (or even a healthy dog for that matter) unless purchased directly from a reputable breeder…..as it is well known, reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores….. The dogs in puppy mills are in inner bred, and even have been known to breed between the cage wires…So you most likely have a dog that has something like wire-haired terrier in there or some breed with a thicker, courser hair….

Unfortunately like many others, you fell prey to the “cute puppy in the window”…..dogs from pet stores are also more prone to illness and other genetic defects….always best when deciding to purchase a dog, to do your research first, seek out a reputable breeder and go from there….there are also many, many good, healthy pups sitting in humane societies that need a good home :-) (as you can see I am an advocate against puppy mills)……please go to stoppuppymills.org to see just where those cute pet store pups come from……….. Good luck with your pup.

I agree with Helen that buying pets from pet stores is never a good idea, and we should do all we can to NOT support puppy mills and irresponsible, greedy breeders.

All these “poos” are not purebreds but mixes of Poodles and another breed, therefore you can never know which breed’s characteristics will happen to be dominant in any individual. There is a 50/50 chance that your pup’s hair will be more like the Pekingese’s rather than Poodle’s – and vice versa. He may also shed unlike a Poodle. Or maybe he won’t… Another thing to keep in mind is that at 11 weeks his hair is still puppy hair and it will likely change as he matures.

He’s still cute and funny and will give you all the love there is. This pup is a member of your family now, so don’t give up on him – regardless what his coat looks like or what his unfortunate background might be!

Best wishes to you and your new puppy!

Kalli makes a good point about the puppy hair at 11 weeks. I have a four year old Peek-a-poo who had that wire-looking hair as a puppy, but as he got older he ended up with a beautiful silky coat.

Hang in there!

My peekapoo “Addie” is 10 years old and very healthy – we have had minimal health problems – just allergies during August and September which is manageable w/medication. She is a perfect fit four our family – she travels well in the car, has no separation anxiety and is very playful. I love this dog like no other. I think she got the best attributes of both parents as she has a silky coat, beautiful brown eyes and a very endearing underbite. I guess we were lucky as we purchased her from a pet shop. This is a great dog.
