ive read that labradoodles & goldendoodles coats can be straight/wavy, cause i would rather them like that instead of curly
i love labs + goldens except i dont like how much they shed ;)

so mixed with poodles their not supposed to shed or very minimal shedding

if you have / had one can u please tell me how much they shed & about their coats (straight or curly)

thankks (:

Hi Dia…
Doodles vary in coat curliness, a lot depends on how many generations of dogs the breeder has been working with. If they are doing first generation (lab bred to poodle or golden bred with poodle) the coats can vary considerably. If they are further down the genetic line and have been selectively breeder the straighter coats to the straighter coats (doodle to doodle) they may have more success in getting the coat right.

These breeds are still very new in N.A. compared to Australia where they first started the mixing. So the variants are high and there is really no guarantee that the coats will all be the same.

One thing to consider is that the curlier coats will be more likely to be non shedding than the straighter coats, as they will be closer to a poodle coat than a lab or golden.

Also, please be sure to research the breeder as well. Their breeding dogs should be certified for hips and eyes and be bred for temperament ( I have met a few not so nice doodle males…), realizing that this is not a true purebred and lots of breeders out there are doing the “designer mix” thing and not responsibly trying to create a new breed standard.

Also being a mixed breed that is fairly new, you may get the poodle personality or the retriever personality, it’s still a bit of a crapshoot.

Well, in my opinion, these breeds should not be on a breed list, because, well they are mutts, and you cant really tell what a mutt will look like, A LOT of goldendoodle/labradoodle owners have complained that their dogs shed, as much as labs(TONS) or as much as goldens(not as much as labs but still a lot), also before any doodle lover out there tries to tell me that they are a breed, no the arent, and dont try to bring up the “every breed was created from mutts” argument, because these breeds have been around for hundreds of years, purebred simply means you know what it will generally look like when its older, and what it will generally act like when its older, and they have a consistent look(excluding color and all that),

You could just get a lab or golden from a responsible breeder(i dont know what the equivalent of AKC is in Canada, but thats where you should find a breeder), make sure they do health checks(OFA, CERF, etc.) and then use a furminator(i think thats how its spelled) once a week(it dramatically reduces the shedding if you brush them once a week, especially with a furminator)

I cant really tell you what which coat they will have when its an adult, or how much its going to shed, not even the breeder can tell you for sure, they can guess but its not exact, and I really dont know where to find a responsible breeder of goldendoodles or labradoodles, to me there are none, they are just BYB’s breeding mutts to me(not that I have anything against mutts, just ppl breeding them and selling them for thousands as purebreds, ive had many ppl tell me that their dog was a purebred goldendoodle at my job, im a vet tech), just watch out for some of those breeders, and never buy online, it will probably be a puppy mill, even if they have a website, you dont know where they got the pictures, always go to their house, always meet the parents(thats the best guess at the temperament of your dog), I myself would just recommend a lab or golden, if you use the furminator, shedding shouldnt be a problem

Yeah, when you mix a dog that doesn’t shed with a dog that does shed, you have a 50% / 50% chance of it not shedding!

WELL said Shiba.inu23 and Tailspin!!!

I agree with Tailspin and Shiba. in response to the coats. Although many people get Doodles because their potential for low shedding and hypoallergenic, this is really not true. You could get a Doodle that sheds as much as a Golden or Labrador (or you could get lucky, like we did, and get one with a great personality and almost no-shedding). Their coats can be wavy, straight or as curly as a Poodle (again, no way of knowing). Their coats will change 3 to 4 times before getting their final coat. They will have both fur like a Golden/Lab and hair like a Poodle.

My Goldendoodle looks more like a Golden and less like a Poodle, she hardly sheds and she’s incredibly smart. We personally chose a Goldendoodle because we wanted a mutt but one with somehow predictable characteristics (not physical but personality wise). She is as loving and loyal as a Golden Retriever and as intelligent as a Poodle. For us, this was the right answer but it is not the answer for many.
