Dogs just like humans have different taste with food or cravings… |

Actually, I would prefer all of my dogs to eat when they are hungry, but I only have one out of three who does. I tried to hide some food where only the one dog would know, but the other two always found it. I also agree with the poster above that just like people there are all kinds of eaters, & some are hung up on food too. |

We currently have two GSDs and have had four total in our lifetime. We have always “free fed” dry food, always having food available so they may eat when hungry. This prevents gorging, which since GSDs are prone to bloat is helpful. It can also help with resource guarding of food. Our shepherds have all been healthy and have had no weight problems, either over or under and we have never had an incident of bloat (Thank Goodness). So, unless she has a nutritional deficiency or medical problem (ie..megaesophagus, EPI) she will eat exactly the amount she needs to and will self regulate as she needs to. Most dogs adjust to the idea of being free feed even after being portion fed. It may take a few months, but most adapt quite fine. At least this has been my observation from training dogs – I am a certified dog trainer. |

I feed Minnie dry in the morning and then dry mix with gravy and a raw egg mixed for dinner. They need some change, I don’t want to eat the same thing all the time! Feed them on a schedule. If Minnie and Jadis do not eat breakfast within a half an hour, it is put away until dinner time. Dogs will become lazy about eating unless they are on a good schedule. I have had dogs all my life and believe a feeding schedule is necessary. I do not believe in “free feeding”. Good luck to you and your dogs are gorgeous!!! |
