My dog is very friendly and very passive. When he visits his friends (doggies) he’ll say Hi, do a little sniffing and then will just wander off. People have asked me, “Doesn’t he like to play?”. He will be 12 years old next week and I don’t think I can ever remember him romping around with another dog? Is this a border collie trait?

I think it’s not uncommon for border collies to be more interested in their person than in strange dogs.

Actually, your description reminds me of a mutt I had. She didn’t have an ounce of dog-aggression in her, she was just far more interested in people (specifically, their ability to throw balls),

Some dogs are just not particularly playful. For the most part, my dog doesn’t care too much about other dogs or even most humans. I don’t mind—I love his little introverted self.

Our dog, Bug, just isn’t interested in other dogs. She would rather chase squirrels in the park than play with other dogs. She is a rescue dog and probably wasn’t socialized when young. Otherwise, she is a sweet girl and a the best welcoming committee at the end of the day.

Hi,

Usually their personality is characteristically alert, energetic, hardworking, and smart. He can also become fearful or shy if he isn’t properly socialized as a puppy. Check out this link for more info:

Border collies are frequently more interested in people than in other dogs. Mine is like that. Sort of a “Oh, hi” and a brief sniff and then ignores the other dog. What are the people doing? That’s what she thinks is important. In fact, my dog finds overly exuberant canines extremely annoying and tells them so in no uncertain terms. All of which is just as well, because she can also try to herd other dogs into a tight corner and other dogs don’t really appreciate that—it can result in foul tempers all the way around. Sometimes I think BCs do best with their own kind—they’re all “on the same page” so to speak.

Border Collies are very intelligent, that makes them very easy to train. They are very playful too! You just have to train them according to their personality. To find out more, please click on:

Generally, a Border Collie is a herding dog, which means he has an overwhelming urge to gather a flock. Maybe that’s why he’s not the type of dog who will play and roam around.
