I have read numerous times that it is not the best idea to buy a Frenchie from a local pet store – or any pet store, for that matter! But I am not the most patient person in the world and I am really looking forward to a new pup. Obviousely a Frenchie considering the topic :P It would be the most convenient to buy my new Frenchie from a pet store, but what is everyones opinion on whether that would be alright for me to do? I personally think a pet store would not be my worst bet. Opinions pleaseee?!?

I strongly recommend going to a shelter or rescue group. Most, if not, all pet shop pups come from puppy mills—a horribly cruel practice in this country.

And if that’s not a deterrent, consider all the health problems these dogs usually wind up with. Don’t do it.

I second Sylvia. The puppies at pet stores come from puppy mills, which churn out dogs for profit without regard for the health or temperament problems their breeding dogs may be passing on to the puppies. Also, the puppies get very little contact with people in that early developmental period, when it’s most important. They will never be as relaxed (and trustworthy) around people as they should have been.

I know you’re eager to have your pup, but consider, you’re going to be living with and caring for this dog for his/her entire life. You’ll be much better off taking the time to find a dog who will be a pleasure to have.

Here’s an article on how to find a good breeder, that has some helpful info on why it’s important to be picky about where your dog comes from:

Sorry to be going on so long, but I just have to add…many puppy mills have been busted for keeping dogs in horrific conditions – no vet care, rampant disease, dogs kept in tiny cages their entire lives, sometimes outside in extreme hot or cold. By buying puppies that come from these mills, we support an industry that’s often extremely cruel. Not a great way to start out your relationship with a dog.

I am a Frenchie owner and rescue person. I cannot tell you how bad buying a Frenchie from a pet store really is. Yes, pet store dogs come from puppymills, but most of the breeds commonly in pet stores also do not have as many health issues as Frenchies are prone too if poorly bred. Not to mention this breed who should be super friendly to everyone and everything can many times end up very aggressive when born in these situations also.

I would never tell anyone buying from a pet store was a smart choice, but with breeds like pugs, French Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Dachshunds and other expensive to care for breeds, would be much more than just a poor decision. We have had a few Frenchies in our area (one surrendered to rescue) who came from a known frenchie selling pet store in the area. At 6 months old she was already having severe hip issues, and after testing her owner found that she would need both hips replaced. Since Flat faced dogs are hard to put under and require human grade anesthesia, putting them under alone is very expensive, add hip replacement on 2 hips…. usually too much for the average person to afford. The owner had to surrender her because she could not take care of her. I have recently heard of some other frenchies, of different ages, from the same store and they too are having the same issue! The surrendered Frenchie came with paperwork, and I was able to trace her back to a Commercial breeder in the midwest, these types of breeders mass produce and send them all over the country to pet stores who order them. Chances are Frenchies from this place could end up in your area too. Do not take the chance. Most pet store frenchies also grow up to be far from the standard and no matter how they looked as a pup, usually look much different than frenchies from good breeders. All in all you will likely end up with something you did not bargain for.

A pet store would most definitely be your worst bet, along with a puppymill(which is where 99% of pet stores get their puppies from)

Never ever ever get from a pet store

Hi,

I think you should look on the newspaper for a known breeder

and see the parents if you consider to buy the puppy.

hope this works
