hi. my maltese is not very interested in treats, but she needs obedience training. i hired a trainer who says she uses a variety of methods, including cesar millan’s and ian dunbar’s. i like the idea of incorporating different methods, but now i’m a little nervous, what with all the cesar millan controversy. i love dunbar’s approach, but i’m skeptical it will work because my baby’s not a treat eater.

Just because she isn’t into treats doesn’t mean you can’t train her with positive methods. Use toys, belly rubs, playtime, getting to meet another dog while you are on a walk, etc. Chances are, you will eventually find a treat she likes anyway. Make sure she is eating one or twol meals a day, not eating free-choice. Experiment with treats. Be creative. Some dogs love tiny pieces of pretzel or plain cheerios with garlic. My Cocker learned 19 tricks with a tennis ball!
Being clear and consistent and fun is what is important, not being dominant.
