I have been reading up the WHITE BOXER. I know they are registerable, just not show quality. Well for those of us who just love the dog, not for show but for pet, they are the same as any other. I have never seen a deaf or blind white boxer, I have in the pit bulls. Does anyone have a white boxer and what do you think. My Ice is 16 months old and awesome.

i have a white boxer who is now 2 years old, we got her as a pup at 8 weeks old. white boxers are seen as a fault in the blood line and unfortunately are usually put down when born. they can also be deaf or blind but on most occasions are fine. its very important to make sure white boxers dont spend too much time in the sun as they can get cancers, we use zinc cream on our boxers nose and ears. our boxer also has two larger ribs than usuall which is another fault associated with having a white boxer but other than a few small things there is nothin wrong with a white boxer apart from a few small things they are happy healthy dogs that still have beautiful boxer natures and make wonderful pets.

They are a fault because they arent as healthy as the colored ones, they are much more prone to be blind and/or deaf…...
Not something most breeders would like to continue…

Also you dont want any boxer to be out in the sun to much, they can get heat stroke very quickly, one time a boxer came in and was having a heat stoke and it was fall, and he only had been walking for 30-45 minutes, at least that’s what the owner said

Not to start a debate but to say the white boxer is not as healthy as the colored ones is a gross understatement. You must look at these findings as this, the white boxers that are often found to be deaf and or maybe blind often end up in shelters are then often there because of being bought from BYB’s and or pet-store’s/puppy-mill’s.

Yes whites do carry the gene to be deaf, but from a reputable breeder they only have about a 5-8% chance of being deaf. There are no other heath concerns with whites that differ from their colored brethren.

You can’t breed out white boxers they come out basically whether you like it or not when you breed a flashy to a flashy you have a 25% chance of getting a white pup.

I have a 6 yr old all white male that is perfectly healthy and never had any health problems associated with the boxer breed. It was common practice to cull white pups born in a litter because they weren’t standard but many breeders are letting people adopt them as companions now. Unfortunately, in Europe, there is still a good number of breeder that still cull the white pups.

White boxers started to be per say “breed out” when they started to use the breed as a working dog more and when it become a war dog, the white color kinda stands out on the front line. One of the foundation females was white.

Straight from the American Boxer Club website…

As to deafness, the genetic basis of white in Boxers is the same as in Dalmatians, albeit without the ticking factor to give the spots. In the UK the incidence of deafness in Dalmatians is about 5% bilaterally deaf and 13% unilaterally deaf, total affected 18. In the States according to Strain the figures are somewhat higher, 8 bilateral and 22% unilateral, total affected 30. I do not know of any good figures for Boxers but it would be reasonable to believe that the incidence is similar. Only the bilaterally deaf Boxers would be recognised of course; under 10.

"The cause of the deafness associated with the white colour is the absence of pigment cells in the inner ear resulting in a loss of sensory hair cells at about 6 – 8 weeks of age. The shortage/absence of pigment cells is also the cause of the white coat and unpigmented third eyelids (haw). Generally speaking, the more pigment in the coat the lower will be the risk of deafness, but all predominantly white dogs are at risk of being deaf.

The flashy show Boxers all carry the gene for white and accept that breeding them together to produce whites will soon be considered unethical."
