Going to pick up my new Cavalier puppy in about a week. I live alone, work 9-5 and have 2 cats. NOW I am being told that Cavs CANNOT be left alone all day. Is that really true? My brother is staying with me until he finds a job and gets a house so that, sadly, should be a while, well after the pup is grown. BUt he won’t be there forever. I do have access to very good dog walkers and to doggie daycares. I am not opposed to crate-training as I saw it do wonders for my sister’s dog. Any thoughts out there? Also, with crate -training, once my pup is older and completely house-broken, does he HAVE to stay in the crate all day? I am curious as to how that works. Thanks :-) |

am afraid its true, cavs are not very at ease at being left alone… to be familiar with more characteristics of cavalier’s.. as for crate training, crates make housetraining simple. Because dogs don’t like to pee or poop where they sleep and eat, they’ll hold it when they’re in their crate. Pop your dog in his crate whenever you’re not with him, and he won’t have any accidents in the house—this prevents a bad habit from forming. for more tips.. goodluck! _ |

Some breeders will not sell a cavalier to someone who plans on leaving it home all day. That is one of the first screening questions. My neighbor had a cavalier until it sadly died from cancer at age 17 months last week. At any rate, leaving the little guy alone during the day did not work out. So, I took him for walks 3-4 days a week at mid-day. Even that was not enough. He started exhibiting behavior problems. So, I after our walk, he started spending 4 hrs/day at my house, followed by another walk before he went home. This seemed to make an enormous difference. He was a terrific dog. |
