All hail the king and queen (to be)!

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, adopted a puppy. Though pedigreed themselves, the royal couple made an absolutely noble decision when they opted to go for a shelter dog. Now that’s leadership.

According to CNN, Camilla contacted the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and asked to be notified about any Jack Russell Terriers that came in. When a 12-week-old arrived on the doorstep, staff emailed photos to the Duchess. Beth, as the pup is now known, will share digs with the couple’s two other dogs, Tosca and Rosie.

Brava, Camilla. Way to show that purebred dogs are available at shelters. Way to show that young puppies are available at shelters. Way to show that the exact animal you’re looking for is probably available at a shelter — or just a very short wait away.

Didn’t catch William’s marriage to Kate Middleton. I’ve never been a royal-watcher. Couldn’t muster much respect for — or interest in — any of them, but I’m newly attentive now. What a difference an adoption makes.

The Royals did one better than the Obamas, who after Thierry widely publicized search for the white house pet got one from a breeder ignoring rescue groups' advise. Their excuse was that they wanted a dog with non allergenic fur. Well there are plenty of rescue poodles who qualify

Yay! For what it's worth, I don't think you're being judgmental. Yes, there are purebred dog rescues in the U.S.--good! And a lot of people adopt, but the point is, it's not enough and I personally know half a dozen people or more who will only get a dog when they buy it as a puppy from a breeder. What Camilla did was thoughtful and kind, hopefully setting the trend for the nation. Just because you can buy a certain type of puppy right away doesn't mean it isn't worth the extra effort to save the life of a shelter dog.

I think you are unfairly judgmental here. Selecting a homeless dog by breed is very common in the states and not frowned upon. In fact, breed specific rescue agencies are common. Further, Jack Russels are difficult to place due to the nigh energy and intelligence of this breed; consequently, the Duchess may have been very smart to get a difficult-to-place dog. Lastly, they may have felt that a pup would fit into the existing "pack" better.

For some, the issue of over-crowded shelters is easily fixed. Just stop the killing. Realistic?
