Thank you so much for having the courage to write and publish an article on a little-known aspect of the animal welfare field from the view of Give a Dog a Bone. Some folks may rather leave what we do as unseen behind the front lines.
If we as a society can look at all of this heartbreak as “normal”, which is sadly true - things like this happen every single day - we can then begin to change our world. If, understandably so, we cannot find it within ourselves for hands-on care, which is impossibly difficult at times, it’s not hard to find other ways to help. Embracing compassion for every species means not purchasing products made from the suffering of lab animals, for instance. Walking or riding a bike instead of driving somewhere means that you’ve made a difference for polar bears in danger of extinction from global warming. Not renting those jet skis means peace for those who live underwater.
With articles like this, Dogtime makes every day an “awareness” day. Thank you.
P.S. I’d like all of you to know that GADAB had a 31% adoption rate in CY 2007!
“Although the "Give A Dog A Bone" program at San Francisco Animal Care and Control is pretty unique, I want to take this opportunity to thank all the "Unsung Heroes" that volunteer, run rescue organizations or in any other way help fill the gaps left open by the more"established" animal welfare agencies. It's people like Corinne and the thousands of other individuals who do their work for little or no pay, just trying to help the most vulnerable of animals...that are the true heroes in our field..

“I have seen, first hand, the tail wagging of the once marginalized, neglected dogs under Corinne's tireless care at Give A Dog A Bone. May her work be an inspiration to all dog shelters across the nation.

“Respecting the miracle of life and treating every living being as value-laden and worthy of love, respect, and humanity...that is the gift of Corrine for the animals - and all of us.”

“Give a Dog a Bone, Corinne Dowling's revolutionary program, is a perfect example of one person making a huge difference in an area that has been completely neglected. Custody dogs in most shelters are driven to madness (forget adoptability) through lack of interaction and mental stimulation. Having worked in a SF Bay Area shelter where custody dogs often were incarcerated for years waiting on court decisions, I've personally seen what happens when shelter workers just don't know what to do with these dogs. Corinne has figured out what to do and she is a huge success. I wish Give a Dog a Bone and Corinne continued perseverance and strength of heart. ”

“Corinne is inspirational to our group as we work with pits from a dog fighting bust in Oct 2007. We been working the dogs by walking, free time in an enclosed kennel, and doing basic obedience. You can see the happiness in the dogs eyes when you approach their cages.
Thank you for sharing this story so we know we are not alone.”

“Corinne is an example of the immeasurable good that one person can do. If everyone in the world did one tenth of what Corrine does, imagine how many problems we could solve. ”

“Corinne is an extraordinary person with a one of a kind program. Her work is amazing but her strength of character divine. How she keeps her energy positive and up beat for the dogs on their rainbow day is unfathomable to me. She is a hero to me.”

“It broke my heart to see what Corinne does with her program. I am able to help with a little financial support every now and again but a consummate dog lover, couldn't do what she does.

“Ms. Dowling is my personal hero. She is a person who saw what needed to be done, and did not discourage herself by pointing out everything that could NOT be done. If all of us took that approach to problems, the world would be a far better place. Don't be deceived by the simplicity. This is a woman of character, and has my deepest respect. - ”
