AvatarMY DOG HAS SUUDENLY BEGAN TO DESTROY ALL HER TOYS HOW CAN I STOP HER DOING THIS?” — NATALIE, May 21 2009

AvatarPlease help! My adult dog lately has been destroying my walls, windows, furniture and anything else she can when Im not home...She is destroying the screens on the windows and chewing through the walls trying to get out of the house...she is costing me a fortune and Im at the end of my rope.I tried to put her in the crate for short periods but she lost three teeth trying to get out...These are all new behaviors over the past two years and I can't take it anymore...I love her but it is financially impossible to keep this going.....Can you explain the behavior and possible sugestions? ” — laxmom07, Apr 28 2008

Me_thumbnailHi beecareful,

Is she getting
enough exercise and time outside the crate? Chewing can be a sign of boredom and not enough activity. If she's a puppy, it may just mean she's trying to relieve teething pain. Give her a chewtoy to use instead. They make chewtoys for puppies that you can put in the freezer (just like teething rings for babies), or you can also wet a washcloth and stick it in the freezer until it's nice and chilly.

I'd try more exercise, chewtoys in her crate (stuff them with kibble to get her addicted to chewing them), and maybe a bitter-tasting spray on the walls or furniture she likes to chew. You'll find an article on these spray products here:
